Autonomous networks: once a hype, gradually becoming a reality for telcos

This blog delves into the challenges telcos face in adopting autonomous networks (AN) and outlines how they can evolve to reach level 5 in TM Forum's AN maturity model.

Autonomous networks (AN) represent one of the primary goals of the telecommunications industry, because they provide significant advantages in terms of automation, efficiency, and cost reduction, while also enhancing network performance security and customer experience. These networks deliver a "Zero-X" experience (zero wait, zero-touch, zero trouble) and feature key applications such as Intent Based Networks and Self Organizing Networks that reduce the extent of manual interventions by system operators (human-in-the-loop) to a minimal degree of interaction (human-on-the-loop).

TM Forum defines five levels of autonomous networks, beyond the level 0 (i.e. Manual operations/maintenance) starting from basic automation (Level 1) to full autonomy (Level 5). Each level represents increased self-management capabilities, reducing the need for human intervention.
