One of the things I love about my role with CGI is that I get to do some things that are a little bit different from the norm… things that are rewarding and exciting in a unique way... and things that enable me to meet some truly inspirational and talented people! A great example of this is a girl’s football team called the ‘Lionesses’ from Whitley Bay. These young ladies aren’t just holding their own and delivering fantastic results; they are also exceeding expectations and beating teams much older than them on both a national and international level.

Supporting local talent: The Lionesses of Whitley Bay

CGI responded to an ask to support this team on their incredible journey, and we were thrilled to provide them with new kit that we hope boosted their morale, matched their professionalism, and made them feel proud and ready for action as they ran onto the pitch! I got to know a little about the girls’ story and wanted to share some of this with you.

Growth and success: From zero to thirty teams

Seven years ago, the club had no girls’ teams at all. Today, there are 28 female teams (30 next season) from U7s to a ladies' seniors’ team who have just completed their first season at the club. This is made up of girls who were U16 in the previous season. Several girls also play in boys/mixed teams, and for the first-time next season, there will be one all-female team that will compete in a boys/mixed league on a Sunday.

Achievements on international stages

Three of the girls’ teams recently played in the Barcelona Girls’ Cup, which involved 93 players and family all traveling abroad to compete in Europe. The U13 Lionesses finished third in their age group, and our U15 Lionesses came fourth. Given this talent, it’s no surprise that a large number of girls also attend Newcastle and Sunderland football development programmes on a weekly basis. I’m confident that we’ll see some of these girls in an England strip one day!

The positive impact of sponsorship

Last year, Whitley Bay Sporting Club had 380 female players registered, and with their growing success, it’s likely that even more will be attracted to the game, which is fantastic! They’re a phenomenal team with an exceptional coaching squad and a really strong support network. We’re proud to have sponsored them and we’re watching their progress keenly and enthusiastically. I know they would love your support too. Well done, girls!

CGI's commitment to supporting local communities

CGI’s Kit Sponsorship Programme is an integral part of our commitment to supporting local communities. By providing kits and support to teams like the Lionesses of Whitley Bay, we help boost morale, foster professionalism, and encourage young talent to pursue their passions. This initiative is not only about providing financial support but also about making a tangible difference in the lives of young athletes and their communities. Through our sponsorship, we aim to promote inclusivity and the growth of girls' and women's football, contributing to a positive trend in sports and community development.
