Embarking on a fresh career path can often be an exciting experience, especially in the rapidly expanding area of emerging technologies. In my current role as Director, Consulting Expert at CGI, I’m continuously scanning the horizon for the next breakthrough or challenge in cyber security. My interests are especially fixed on Artificial Intelligence —evaluating its potential rewards and risks for our clients and examining how it might help refine our existing security measures.

Stepping up in Tech: A new direction

Transitioning from my previous roles to where I am now has presented new challenges such as leadership and greater responsibility. Where I was a director of my own company, when I was contracting into the Financial Services and Defence Sector, and have also held senior project and team lead roles with other companies – those experiences don't quite tie in with my responsibilities at CGI.

Here, for the first time, I find myself in a role that not just demands technical expertise but also requires a broader view of where technology is heading and how we can harness its full potential for the benefit of our clients.

When I first crossed paths with CGI, it felt like the change I needed. My journey began amidst feelings of stagnation; I was in a niche role and felt like I was missing out on opportunities for advancement. Ironically, it was a project undertaken through a consortium including CGI that uncovered the prospects I was looking for. Interacting closely with CGI Partners, the designation we give to our employees, the company's ethos resonated with me, and when a role caught my eye, I applied to it without hesitation. CGI's reality has lived up to its reputation, with the promises signaled during my initial days standing true.

Key skills for a Cyber security specialist

Reflecting on my career growth, adaptability has been my cornerstone — my approach has always involved a cycle of reinvention. Identifying the skills in demand, mastering them, and continually seeking the next big thing has been fundamental to my journey. My knack for grasping new concepts swiftly and my ability to convey complex ideas in simple language has been invaluable. Equally important is the honesty to acknowledge what I don't know and my eagerness to dive into the unknown. In an evolving industry, each day brings a chance to learn, often through collaboration with knowledgeable colleagues.

Making a mark: Growing your career

For those aspiring to stand out and drive their career growth, I recommend being generous with your expertise. Offering help, acquiring new skills, and sharing knowledge is a powerful exercise. This does not mean giving up your role as the 'go-to' expert, but instead cultivating a supportive community around you. In doing so, not only do you foster your skills among peers, but you also free yourself to engage in the more complex, exciting aspects of your work. CGI's culture of nurturing professional networks complements this strategy perfectly.

Looking into the future, I see my role revolving around the building of communities focused on growing areas of technology, underpinning the importance of continuous development and mastering expertise. With the increased prominence of generative AI, it's become apparent that companies must prepare for its integration — crafting usage policies, pinpointing associated risks, and conducting assessments as the technology evolves. Advances in AI, whether for defensive tactics or the growth in its offensive use, point towards a textured future where we, as cyber security guardians, remain vigilant and ready to Assess the Risk, Protect the Business and Operate with Confidence.

In a world where technology and risk are in constant flux, my journey in cyber security still excites me and I believe there are many opportunities for growth and vigilance — a path I am fully committed to navigating with CGI.
