In today's rapidly advancing technological landscape, mixed reality experiences have emerged as a powerful tool for creating innovative solutions with a significant impact on various sectors. Particularly in the realms of medicine, education, and the environment, mixed reality powered by the Unity engine (a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies) has proven instrumental in the development of Tech for Good initiatives.

Helping students with special educational needs

One innovative example of the potential of the Unity engine lies in the creation of mixed reality experiences designed to empower students with special educational needs (SEN). At CGI, we have developed a virtual reality (VR) experience for SEN students at Bettridge School, aimed at boosting their confidence in navigating a local supermarket. By leveraging the immersive capabilities of VR, students can explore a realistic, virtual replica of a large local supermarket using 360 photogrammetry. This approach provides a safe and controlled environment for students to gain familiarity of their local space.

Endless possible use cases

Mixed reality has shown great potential in assisting individuals with conditions such as Dementia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Parkinson's Disease. By integrating mixed reality into everyday healthcare practices, medical professionals can leverage its immersive and interactive nature to treat patients in ways that supplement or surpass traditional medical approaches. As mixed reality becomes more prevalent in society, numerous case studies highlight its effectiveness in improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

How can we help?

At CGI, we work with a range of platform solutions. We have seen that Unity's flexibility and cross-platform deployment capabilities have contributed to its widespread adoption in various Tech for Good initiatives. I’ve used Unity to iterate rapidly, reducing development time and costs while ensuring compatibility across different devices and platforms. This adaptability has led to the creation of solutions that address critical challenges in medical, educational, and environmental sectors, fostering positive change in society.

As this area evolves, we at CGI are excited to help organisations, and our members, look to positive change situations where mixed reality can bring positive outcomes for society. Please reach out to me to discuss further or share your own examples.
