At CGI, we recognise the critical importance of protecting and enhancing nature and biodiversity. We are committed to sustainable development that values the natural world—not just for its intrinsic worth, but for the vital services it provides to society, business, and the planet.

Understanding natural capital

Natural capital refers to the value that nature provides—such as clean air, fertile soil, biodiversity, and climate regulation. Historically, these benefits were underrepresented in financial systems. CGI helps organisations measure, value, and monitor natural capital to support evidence-based decision-making.

Our experts support clients in the following areas:

  • Natural capital accounting
Measuring and disclosing the value of natural assets for national and organisational accounting.

  • Appraisal and evaluation
Supporting investment decisions and policy development across infrastructure, resource management, and public health.

  • Policy design and advisory
Helping to design effective policies that contribute to a net-zero, nature-positive economy.

  • Economic valuation
Using evidence-based methods to assess the value of nature and its benefits to people.

Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)

We are proud to be the first IT company in the UK to produce a Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) report—and the first to use geospatial and Earth observation technology to baseline our environmental impact.

By aligning with TNFD best practice, we help clients navigate evolving nature-related risks and seize opportunities in the green economy.

Supporting biodiversity through beehives

CGI Bee Hives from Buckley's Bees

As part of our commitment to supporting biodiversity, we’ve introduced 80,000 bees across four beehives at our Bridgend and Chippenham offices. Partnering with local experts at Buckley’s Bees, we’re transforming our green spaces into thriving habitats for native Welsh and English bee species.

Bees play a vital role in pollinating plants, maintaining healthy ecosystems, and supporting food production. Our members also benefit from fresh honey, the chance to learn about bee behaviour.

Investing to restore peatlands

UK peatlands

CGI is supporting peatland restoration in the UK and Indonesia through our partnership with Forest Carbon. Peatlands are crucial carbon sinks—although they cover just 3% of the Earth’s land surface, they store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined.

Our support includes:

  • Talla Reservoir, Scotland – Restoring peatlands and enhancing biodiversity.

  • Katingan REDD+ project, Indonesia – Protecting tropical peatland, supporting local livelihoods, and delivering verified carbon credits.

Tree planting through our No Planet B initiative

Children Having Fun And Balancing on a tree

Since 2017, CGI UK has planted 21,500 native trees through our No Planet B programme—supporting biodiversity, climate action, and local communities.

We launched the programme with Forest Carbon and Borders Forest Trust, planting 5,500 trees at Talla and Gameshope in the Scottish Borders to represent our 5,500 members at the time. Since then, we’ve expanded our efforts nationwide, supporting projects in Worcester, Surrey, Chesterfield, Penyffordd, Clovenfords, Fulwood Barracks, and Christian Malford.

Using AI to prevent water pollution

As part of our Sustainability Exploration Environmental Data Science (SEEDS) programme, CGI uses advanced technology to tackle environmental challenges.

In Combe Martin, Devon, we worked with Ordnance Survey to develop a solution that uses AI, sensors, and satellite imagery to predict water pollution caused by sewage and agricultural runoff—with over 91% accuracy.

This data-driven approach helps to protect marine biodiversity, improve water quality, and support public health in coastal communities.
