Annually, CGI leaders around the world meet face-to-face with business and IT executives to gather their perspectives on the trends affecting their enterprises, including business and IT priorities, IT spending, budgets and investment plans. In 2020, we conducted in-person interviews with 23 space client executives across 5 regions, who indicate a continued focus on IT modernisation and the cloud.
Interviews were conducted before and after the pandemic declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11, 2020, providing unique insights into evolving priorities. We provide a short summary of some of these insights here.
IT modernisation and cloud is the new top trend
IT modernisation and cloud solutions has become the top trend by impact in 2020. Becoming digital was once again the most important business priority, while cybersecurity remained the top IT priority. |

Post-pandemic declaration trends show decreasing/flat budgets have less impact
For interviews conducted after the pandemic declaration by WHO on March 11, 2020, decreasing or flat budgets and spend as a trend lessens greatly in impact (-85%). Becoming digital also slightly decreases in impact (-20%), while IT modernisation, cloud solutions, and cybersecurity remain the same (+0%), compared to earlier interviews.
Cybersecurity is the top investment priority for the next 3 years
This year, 70% of executives plan to invest in cybersecurity, IT modernisation, cloud, and cloud services within the next 3 years. From an IT leader perspective, cybersecurity is more “business as usual” (-6% from 2019), but from a business leader perspective (especially post-March 11), it is becoming more important (+7% from 2019).
Data analytics and big data remain most important business priority for C-level leaders
In 2020, 91% of C-level executives continue to cite data analytics and big data as their most important business priority. Both are imperative for supporting space data solutions in adjacent marketplaces.
Interest in substantial managed services dramatically rises after pandemic declaration
This year, we asked space executives to share why they use managed services and how they plan to leverage them. Top reasons cited include the cost savings generated from managed services, along with a desire to maintain control. Responses concerning plans for using managed services vary before and after the pandemic declaration, as in the example shown.

Benchmarking clients’ satisfaction with their own IT organisation
(Scores from 1 to 10, with 10 most satisfied, showing 3 out of 10 available attributes)
For the third year, business and IT executives interviewed ranked their satisfaction with their own IT organisations based on the 10 key attributes of a world-class IT organisation. For some attributes, business leaders report lower satisfaction levels with their internal IT compared to IT leaders. The partnership of lines of business with IT to consistently introduce applicable innovations sees the widest gap, with 1.7 points more satisfaction for business leaders, which is 1.4 points higher (+26%) than the previous year.
