Amber Holmes: My Journey at CGI: Supporting CGI Partners and Embracing Change

When I joined CGI in April 2022, I never imagined the incredible journey ahead. Most recently transitioning from the Talent Planning Team, I was entrusted with supporting our CGI Partners and addressing client needs through talent management and planning. My role was more than just filling positions—it was about ensuring our CGI Partners found career paths aligned with their talents, ambitions, and sometimes even undiscovered skills.

Accepting challenges and appreciating rewards

The aspect of my job I’ve loved the most is connecting with our CGI Partners on a deeper level. It’s not just about finding someone their next assignment; it’s about nurturing their growth, helping them explore new possibilities, and guiding them toward their future. I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with our leaders and CGI Partners to understand their unique stories, which has given me the opportunity to help align talent with our business's needs in creative and impactful ways. 

Of course, navigating the complexities of talent management comes with its challenges. One of the hardest parts is that there’s rarely a straightforward answer when it comes to people. Everyone’s career journey is different, every client has unique interests and needs, and our talent constantly evolves. But what makes it all worthwhile is the vast knowledge within CGI. Collaborating with colleagues to creatively address these challenges has been an exciting and fulfilling experience.

Starting a new chapter

Now, as I transition into a new role in Strategic Operations, I’m filled with excitement for the next chapter. I’ll be stepping into an Operations Analyst position, supporting business development within the Operations Optimization function. This new role closely aligns with my long-term aspirations, particularly utilizing my change management certification. Much like my work in talent management, I am eager to support change, foster growth, and help CGI continue to thrive.

Supporting a community at CGI

One of the highlights of my time at CGI has been my involvement with our employee resource groups, especially Latinos Unidos CGI and PRIDE@CGI. I'm also active in social clubs and a member of our Corporate Social Responsibility Committee. I love connecting with people, and these groups have given me the chance to expand my network both within and outside of CGI. I’m naturally people-oriented and outgoing, building relationships almost instantly- friends with you before you know it! Because of my passion for fostering connections, I was recently selected by our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team to attend a major workplace summit in Orlando. This is an exciting opportunity for growth, and being recognized for my strengths in networking has been both rewarding and humbling. CGI is a place where my efforts feel valued.

Pursuing personal adventure

Outside of work, my life is filled with adventure and family. As a proud mother of twin boys, my husband and I cherish the time we spend sharing our love of nature with them—whether camping, canoeing on the lake or simply taking a peaceful walk. We find joy in disconnecting from our daily routines to focus on quality time outdoors. I also sincerely appreciate the arts, with special interests in live music and tattoos designed by various artists.

One aspect of my personal life that is particularly important to me is connecting with others in meaningful ways. Within my family, I have always cherished the tradition of making homemade tamales. It’s a process that allows me to make memories with my mother, husband, and children, followed by the opportunity to share an authentic cultural dish with friends and family. Outside my home, my role as an ambassador for METAvivor, a non-profit organization supporting those affected by metastatic breast cancer, has enabled me to connect with my community in an impactful way through advocacy and sponsorship efforts – all inspired by my dear friend and career coach, who has been an incredible mentor to me.

Reflecting on a career and looking ahead

Reflecting on my time at CGI, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to grow, connect, and make a difference. It’s a place where my passion for people is not only recognized but celebrated. As I move into my new role, I look forward to driving change, developing in new ways, and embracing the exciting challenges that lie ahead.
