Every year, on January 24, India celebrates National Girl Child Day. Started by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, this initiative focuses on addressing the challenges and inequities girls face in Indian society and aims to improve society’s attitude toward girl children.
To celebrate the spirit of this initiative and reinforce our corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitment to value and advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) in our company and in our communities, our Asia Pacific Global Delivery Centers of Excellence (APAC GDCoE) organized a virtual event to connect CGI’s women leaders with girl students across multiple cities in India.
This is the third consecutive year that the APAC GDCoE has recognized National Girl Child Day through a specially organized community outreach event. This year, over 100 girl students participated from various non-governmental organizations, such as Shanti Bhavan in Bangalore, Bhumi and Team Everest in Chennai, Sphoorti Foundation, Centre for Social Service, and Desire Society in Hyderabad.
Nicole Girard, Consul General of Canada in Bangalore, attended the event and interacted with the students. The event also included a keynote from George Mattackal, President, and Deepak Shenoy, VP and DI&E Lead, of APAC GDCoE on the importance of education as a catalyst for societal change and providing women equal opportunities in nation-building. This was followed by “River of life,” a panel discussion between CGI’s women leaders who shared personal and professional experiences about their careers and challenges they encountered. They also participated in an interactive Q&A with the students.
At CGI, we welcome the opportunity to inspire young girls and women about careers in technology, inform them about opportunities in the industry and help them develop skills that can help them achieve employment.
