Alliander and CGI received the 2014 Nederland ICT Environment Award for their joint development of an open smart grid platform. Nederland ICT is a trade association for more than 550 information and communication technology (ICT) companies across the Netherlands.
The award was presented on September 30, 2014 during the organization’s “Night of the Digital Economy” event in The Hague. Hundreds of ICT executives and senior managers were in attendance.
Alliander, a major energy distributor in the Netherlands, commissioned CGI to develop the open smart grid platform to enable the monitoring and control of objects in public areas through applications. The first application developed controls public lighting, enabling optimal “on and off” switching of street lights and driving significant energy savings.
After three successful pilot projects in the cities of Leiden, Amsterdam and Zatbommel, the app will be rolled out to 14 municipalities by the end of 2014. A large-scale implementation is scheduled for 2015, which will cover more than 800,000 street lights and help reduce energy consumption across the country.
Both Alliander and CGI are strong proponents of an open and smart society where the use of smart apps drives innovation and environmental sustainability.
Alliander plans to invest in further development of the platform in collaboration with other organizations that manage public infrastructures in the Netherlands, as well as businesses that market smart devices and smart apps.
