CGI (NYSE: GIB) (TSX: GIB.A) completed the successful migration of the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) to a hybrid cloud environment, providing operational efficiency and cost optimization with the ability to scale resources based on demand and helping USAID comply with the Federal Cloud First Policy introduced by the White House in 2011.
Leveraging the holistic hybrid IT management services and solutions of CGI Unify360, CGI was responsible for moving more than 900 virtual and physical servers as part of the effort. This modernization of USAID's global network included the successful implementation of a multi-tier, secure architecture encompassing network edge filtering, intrusion detection/prevention, and implementation of application firewalls. CGI's defense-in-depth approach equips USAID with a secure solution that safeguards agency data while still enabling modern communication. Further, USAID did not suffer a single unplanned outage of an application during the migration. The key was the utilization of CGI's Client Partner Management Framework methodology, which embedded CGI personnel with important USAID stakeholders.
With its move to the hybrid cloud, USAID now has a resilient, highly-available, fault tolerant IT infrastructure that can be easily scaled to meet demands in near real-time (while paying only for what it consumes) while decreasing possible application outages and increasing the operational efficiency of the agency. Additionally, cloud optimization activities—such as governance-based schedule policies—will allow the agency to recoup additional savings by standing down resources during non-work hours.
"USAID recognized the challenge and cost expenditures associated with operating and maintaining physical data centers and demonstrated leadership in Federal agency cloud adoption," said CGI Senior Vice-President Kenyon Wells.
