CGI through the years

Our decades of continuous growth is a testament to the confidence our clients place in us, to the commitment of our consultants, and to the sustaining principles and resilient business model on which we were founded.

1976 to 1985: Building the CGI Dream
1986 to 1995: Laying the foundation for growth

To fund our first acquisition, CGI became a public company in 1986, raising the capital needed to accelerate our evolution. This allowed us to offer the full continuum of IT services—business and strategic IT consulting, systems integration and managed services.

In 1992, we created the CGI Management Foundation to serve as the backbone for all management frameworks, policies and guidelines, aligning our decisions with the long-term interests of our stakeholders. We also became the first North American IT consulting firm to earn the ISO 9001 certification for our project management framework.

By 1996, CGI’s focus on quality, innovation and financial strength helped us grow our annual revenue to $122 million.

1996 to 2005: Expanding through build and buy

As our clients became global industry leaders, we adopted a growth strategy we call “Build and Buy”:

  • Build through new business generated from existing and new clients
  • Buy through acquisitions that offer strategic, cultural and financial alignment

We also completed three major acquisitions during this decade:

  • 1998: Merger with Bell Sygma, nearly doubling our size
  • 2001: Merged with IMRGlobal, expanding our global delivery footprint to India
  • 2004: Merger with American Management System (AMS), doubling our U.S. presence and tripling operations in Europe

Anchored on ethical and sound business principles and values, we continued to grow steadily and profitably throughout the Y2K and dot-com bubble disruptions. By 2006, our annual revenue reached $3.5 billion.

2006 to 2015: Transforming through global integration

Our strategic objective to double in size led to these defining moments:

  • 2010: Merged with Stanley Inc., expanding our U.S. federal market footprint, particularly in defense and intelligence
  • 2012: Entered into a transformational agreement with Logica, an Anglo-Dutch firm, increasing our workforce to 68,000 CGI Partners and strengthening our reach across the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific

These actions cemented CGI’s position as one of the largest IT and business consulting services firms globally. The diversification of our geographic presence, strong industry portfolio, right mix of services, and proven operating discipline further solidified our operational resilience.

By the end of 2016, our annual revenue reached $10.7 billion.

2016 to 2025: Driving growth through innovation

We’ve continued to grow with purpose, focusing on local market depth, sector expertise and emerging technologies. Significant milestones include:

Strategic acquisitions

  • 2016-2020: Expanded our capabilities in banking, digital services and automotive software with firms like JSL, Alcyane, Collaborative Consulting, Affecto, ckc AG, Acando and SCISYS. In 2020, we also entered new markets and sectors through Meti and TeraThink.

Global expansion

  • 2021-2022: Strengthened our presence in the U.S. federal market and Southern Europe via Array, CMC, Unico, Harwell and Umanis
  • 2023: Merged with Momentum Consulting in Miami that brought in additional expertise in the retail, manufacturing, transportation and logistics sectors. In 2023, we also announced a plan to invest $1 billion on the expansion of AI capabilities to help clients design and deliver responsible, ROI-led strategies.

Continued momentum

  • 2024: Announced several mergers including Celero’s credit union business (Canada), Aeyon in CGI Federal (digital and AI) and Daugherty in the U.S. (AI, data analytics, strategic IT consulting and business advisory services for Fortune 500 clients).
  • 2025: Strengthened our presence in the UK with BJSS (technology and engineering consultancy), in Germany and Spain with Novatec (digital services), and in Quebec City with Momentum Technologies.

Today, we have over 93,000 CGI Partners worldwide and posted annual revenue of CA$14.68 billion. Read more about our latest company statistics in the CGI at a glance.
